Our Best American Short Story rankings come from the Awards given each year by the same name. We collected as many of the published results that we could find online since the Awards began in 1987. We don’t have every year, but we have rolled up all years into one fairly unhelpful factor. We don’t intend this factor to be the basis of your decision-making, but rather a scale-tipper or feather in the cap. We believe the Pushcart Awards to be a far superior guide to the ongoing quality, or lack of it, especially with the richer data we can provide behind it.
